Mixal DaMix – UmBahhRella Remix

It’s everywhere – you hear it on the radio, in shopping malls, in the public toilet and even at the hawker centre: thefamiliar (and) annoying R&B hit, “Umbrella”, or as Rihanna would have it - “Um-ber-ella”.

Being overplayed as it is, it certainly shares a penchant for being over-covered as well, and the novelty has certainly worn out by now. So what has this cover, or ‘remix’ as the artiste would have, got that caught my attention?

For starters, while I’ve heard numerous funk-ed and rock versions, a metal version is certainly a first for me. So curiously, I decided to take a listen by taking a look at his myspace site.  I mean, what the heck, it can’t possibly kill me, can it?

From the point ‘play’ to the end of this remix, I was quite frankly speaking blown away and ripped up: by laughter, of course. With sampled sounds of thunder and rain to start the song, this remix that brings to mind Metallica’s iconic numbers “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and “Master of Puppets” – with a low, snarling voice, trashing guitars and a blazing solo to boot!

This is much-welcome refreshing take on the massively overplayed Rihanna number, and this “Chuckle” metalhead certainly deserves kudos for his arrangements and ability to give the likes of Spinal Tap and The Darkness a run for their money.

And yes, it is still “um-ber-ella-ella, ey, ey, ey” !
